Introducing SATLAS
If you are a producer trying to find a facility in Cape Town, a line producer costing a shoot in Johannesburg, or a foreign production wondering what South Africa can actually service, there is no single place to look. There are directories, most of them stale. There are association member lists, most of them partial. There is a great deal of word of mouth.
What there was not, until now, is a map.
SATLAS is a live, interactive atlas of the South African and global creative industries. Studios, post houses, animation companies, VFX facilities, stages. Where they are, what they do, how to reach them.
It is free. There is no account, no paywall, and no upsell.
Why we built it
Partly because we kept needing it. Every conversation about bringing work to South Africa runs into the same question, which is some version of who is actually here and what can they do, and answering it properly meant a fortnight of asking around.
Mostly, though, because the industry is stronger when it is legible. A production company in London deciding where to place a show is comparing what it can see. If our industry is hard to see, we lose work we should have won, and we lose it silently.
A map is a small thing. But a map is how a place stops being a rumour.
What is on it
The first release covers South African facilities, with global coverage building out alongside. Each entry carries location, discipline, and contact.
We would rather it were accurate than complete, so it will grow slowly and carefully.
Add yourself, or correct us
If you run a facility and you are not on it, or you are on it and we got something wrong, tell us. This only works if the industry treats it as theirs.
SATLAS is built and maintained by Lenscowboy. It is not a product and it is not for sale. We built it because the industry needed one.
